Rendsburg
Schiffbrückenplatz 17
24768 Rendsburg
On the Kiel Canal, the route of the cruise liners, lies Rendsburg, right in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein. The lively old town is filled with street cafes, theatre, culture, history and the ‘blue line’ which leads you from one sight of interest to another.
One imposing site is the huge Rendsburg High Bridge, with its transporter bridge hanging from long steel cables – this kind of ferry is a rarity throughout the world.
A delightful activity is a discovery tour through the town, along the canal and up onto the viewing platform of the high bridge at a height of 40 metres.
Sights of interest and places to visit
A spectacular sight comes around once a year in autumn, when the Kiel Canal in Rendsburg becomes the venue for the world’s toughest rowing race, as the national teams compete over a 12.7-kilometre stretch from Breiholz to the ‘Kreishafen’ harbour.
Worth a look are the town theatre, the ‘Hohes Arsenal’ culture centre and the alleys of the Rendsburg old town around the old town hall, the Marienkirche church and the ‘Paradeplatz’. The ‘blue line’ discovery trail is ideal for exploring all of these.
Also of interest is the ship welcoming station by the high bridge, the operators of which play the national anthem of the ship’s homeland and dip the German flag on the large flagpole as an international shipping salute.
