Lübeck
Holstentorplatz 1
23552 Lübeck
Narrow alleys and old houses, salty air and proud sailors, marzipan and maritime flair – that’s what Lübeck and Travemünde are made of! Into the winding alleys of the old town you go. These have been designated a world cultural heritage site by UNSECO. Onward through hidden passages and courtyards to the beautiful relics on show in the Anker museum harbour. Step inside the Buddenbrooks and Günter Grass houses to discover art and literature from a new perspective. Finish at the most beautiful Christmas markets in the north – whilst all the time taking in that fresh sea air.
Sights of interest and places to visit
Holsten Gate
Behind the thick walls of this famous symbol of Lübeck lies the exhibition ‘The Hanseatic League – the power of trade’. The Lübeck tradesman of the Middle Ages invites you into his fascinating world of long-distance trade and shipping.
Buddenbrook House
Heinrich and Thomas Mann are amongst the city’s most famous sons. The Buddenbrooks house has been dedicated to the two authors and the Buddenbrook family from Thomas Mann’s novel since 1993.
Günter Grass House
The artist’s residence: it is dedicated to the multi-talented winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Günter Grass. In addition to the remarkable exhibition of manuscripts, pictures and sculptures, the building serves as a forum for literature and fine arts.
Willy-Brandt House
The Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation created a memorial to this famous son of Lübeck in December 2007. The life and work of the former German Chancellor are honoured in the Willy Brandt House. After Thomas Mann and Günter Grass, a third Nobel Prize winner whose life is closely linked to Lübeck has received a unique memorial and centre of documentation.
Heiligen Geist Hospital
Alongside magnificent churches, the Lübeck residents also built the Heiligen Geist Hospital (Holy Ghost Hospital), where the sick and elderly were already treated as early as the Middle Ages. Around Christmas time you can experience the enchanting medieval atmosphere of the arches at the unique arts and crafts market.
Town hall
The dark tiles of the town hall stand out noticeably from the otherwise classic red construction. The patricians extended it consistently, adding the magnificent facade with its wind holes, the small decorative balcony and the three turrets, or so-called ‘giants’.
