Bad Segeberg, officially recognised as a spa and climatic health resort, is the town of the Karl May Festival. As the gateway to Holstein Switzerland, it encompasses the hilly forest, hedgerow and lake landscape which is characteristic of Schleswig-Holstein.
The symbol of Bad Segeberg in the 91-m-high Kalkberg hill, which offers a splendid panoramic view over the town and its green surroundings.
The chalk mines underneath the Kalkberg are open to visitors. These mines provide the largest winter residence for bats in northern and Central Europe, with around 15,000 staying there. You can learn lots of fascinating facts in the NOCTALIS bat museum.
