Central, multi-faceted, yet manageable in size: Neumünster is situated in the middle of the holiday state between the seas. From here, within an hour at most, you can reach the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, all significant attractions in Schleswig-Holstein, the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and the neighbouring country Denmark.

Sights of interest and places to visit

Neumünster has plenty to offer: concerts, the second-largest town festival in Schleswig-Holstein, the Holstenköste, art events, theatre, shopping, dining and lots of nature in the surrounding area. The Einfelder See lake and the Dosenmoor nature reserve are particularly worth a visit. Neumünster hosts trade fairs and is one of the venues for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF). In view of the many international equestrian events hosted in the Holstenhallen, this urban district has also made its name as an equestrian town (www.pferdestadt.de).
Neumünster makes an ideal base and hub for bicycle tours

Neumünster is located in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, 62 kilometres north of Hamburg and 31 kilometres south of Kiel. Thanks to the A7/E45 motorway from Hamburg – Flensburg (with 3 exits to Neumünster) and the national rail service (high-speed ICE trains stop at Neumünster – www.bahn.de), Neumünster offers excellent options for arrival or onward travel. It is also just a stone’s throw from Denmark.

Furthermore, the ‘Nordbahn’ (www.nbe-nordbahn.de) recently started an hourly train service between Neumünster, Bad Segeberg and Bad Oldesloe, with good connections to the state capital of Kiel, and to Hamburg, Flensburg and Heide.

The newly created southern tangent of main roads (Bundesstrassen 205 and 404) have also improved the links to the Hamburg – Berlin motorway (A 24). All this makes Neumünster a traffic hub of Schleswig-Holstein.

The nearest international airport is Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel (www.ham.airport.de). In addition, there is Lübeck Airport, with flights heading to Pisa, Milan and London (www.flughafen-luebeck.de). By the way: the town on the river Schwale can also be reached via a commercial airport. Its opening times in summer are Wednesday to Friday 1.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. or sunset; Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can find airport information, approach charts and much more at www.fscn.de.
